Alternative Views:
An intricate cast iron stair panel from the Mecca Apartment Building, 1891 by the firm of Edgebrook and Burnham, the Mecca was originally built as a luxury hotel for the World's Fair of 1893. The building became an important residential dwelling for African Americans during the African Renaissance of the early part of the 20th Century. Another of these panels currently hangs in the newly opened Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
